You’re here because you want to learn Italian.
Here, you’ll learn why starting with vocabulary is a trap that makes learning Italian twice as hard and what you should master before you start learning Italian words.
And no, it’s not Italian grammar.
But before we start, let me ask you a question.
Is it good to spend more time studying Italian than you really need to?
Of course, it’s not good to study Italian more than you need to, but many students do. They end up studying longer and harder just because of one mistake.
And that mistake affects
- how natural you sound,
- how well Italians understand you, and
- how easily you can hear and recognize Italian words when native speakers use them.
The goal of learning Italian is not to stay stuck in lessons for weeks and months.
The goal is to use Italian in real life as soon as possible, whether you need it for work, travel, casual conversations, or something else.
Now, I’ll show you what that mistake is and how to start learning Italian.
There are three essential pillars of learning Italian.
And you probably already know about the first two.
The first pillar is vocabulary, because without words, there is no language and no communication.
The second pillar is grammar, because without grammar, you can’t use words correctly. Without it, your sentences may sound strange, unclear, or even mean something different from what you wanted to say.
And there is a third pillar, and that is Italian pronunciation.
Ignoring Italian pronunciation is one of the main reasons many students end up studying Italian longer and harder than they should, because it leads to the mistake I mentioned at the beginning of this video.
That mistake is learning your own version of Italian rather than real Italian.
Italian does not use the same sounds as English.
But most people usually start learning Italian by downloading language apps, memorizing word lists, and repeating common phrases.
The problem is that when you learn Italian this way, you often learn words without understanding Italian sound patterns, pronunciation rules, and rhythm.
So when you learn Italian words with English sounds in your head, you are not learning Italian words the way Italians say them.
You are learning your own version of Italian because you are building your Italian vocabulary on top of English sounds.
That means something can sound perfectly fine to you, but Italians may have a hard time understanding you because you’re mispronouncing Italian words.
You are saying Italian words with English instead of Italian sounds.
And on the other hand, when you try to listen to native speakers, you may not understand them well because they pronounce Italian words differently from the way you learned them.
They are using real Italian pronunciation, but those Italian words sound different to your ear.
So even if you know the word, you may not recognize it when an Italian says it.
That’s why, before you start learning Italian, you should first learn how Italian pronunciation works, because without that knowledge you can end up learning many Italian words with the wrong pronunciation.
And the longer you learn Italian words incorrectly, the more those mistakes become habits that are harder to fix later.
That’s why pronunciation should be the first thing you learn before you start learning Italian and building your Italian vocabulary.
It’s because pronunciation shapes how you hear, remember, and use Italian words.
And now, I’m going to give you free access to one Italian pronunciation lesson.
Inside, you’ll learn
- how Italian pronunciation works,
- why it is different from English, and
- what you need to understand before you start building your Italian vocabulary
